Heavy Machinery Registry

The AOSH maintains a special heavy machinery registry for all heavy machinery and equipment in Iceland. The registration of heavy machinery is subject to the rules on the registration and inspection of mobile work machinery and heavy machinery.

New Registration

Before the machine is put into use, it must be registered with the AOSH. New registrations are only made electronically on My Pages on the AOSH website.

Foreign companies that intend to operate in Iceland shall bear in mind that before a machine, which is covered by the rules on registration and inspection of mobile work machines and heavy machinery, is taken into use, it must be registered with the AOSH. Please note that a heavy machinery must be registered with an Icelandic ID number.

The registration numbers of heavy machinery and equipment have two letters and four digits. The first letter of the registration number indicates a main category and the second letter a sub-category. The numbers are serial numbers within certain categories and together with the two letters is the registration number of a specific machine or device.

The AOSH publishes a registration manual for further instructions on registration of heavy machinery.

Frequently Asked Questions

You can apply for a new registration of heavy machinery/equipment on My Pages on AOSH’s website. To do this, you need to have an electronic ID or an Íslykill.

Information about this can be found in the registration manual for  heavy machinery and equipment.

You can see the price of the new registration of heavy machinery/equipment in the AOSH tariff here on the website.

You need to contact the AOSH at  tel: 550 4600 and provide the registration number of the machinery.

The model year of the machinery can be found by visiting My Pages at the AOSH’s website or at island.is.

The serial number can be found by going to My Pages at the AOSH’s website or at island.is.

Once you have received a number plate from us, you can clear the device through customs. An inspector from the AOSH then contacts you and brings the plate for the machinery and inspects it.

Only the insurance companies can provide information on whether there is insurance on heavy machinery. The AOSH does not have that information.

The AOSH does not require insurance and it is the responsibility of the owner of the machinery to contact the insurance companies.

Yes, all heavy machinery to be registered must be CE marked.

You can deregister heavy machinery on My Pages on the AOSH’s website. To do this, you need to have an electronic ID or an Íslykill.

Mobile Machinery Intended for Driving in Traffic

Owners of mobile machinery intended for driving in traffic, i.e. on public roads, need to register them in the vehicle register and affix a license plate to them for identification.

The vehicle register is managed by the Icelandic Transport Authority, but for the sake of efficiency for the owners of heavy machinery, the AOSH handles registrations and changes of ownership of them. Applications for the registration of heavy machinery for driving in traffic are available on the AOSH’s My pages.

Rules on the registration of heavy machinery are set out in the Traffic Act which entered into force on 1 January 2020 and the Regulation on the Registration of Vehicles.

The fee for the registration of heavy machinery for driving in traffic is determined according to the tariff of the Icelandic Transport Authority. The fee is divided into a traffic safety fee, a fee for new vehicle registration and a fee for license plates.

The license plates will be available at the AOSH’s reception at Dvergshöfði 2 in Reykjavík. Until the end of the year, those living in rural areas can have them sent free of charge to the nearest post office.

The following categories can be plated:

  • EA – Excavators on wheels with 360 ° rotation, own weight > 4 tons
  • EH – Excavators on wheels (tractor excavators), own weight > 4 tons
  • FH – Loader shovels on wheels (wheel loaders), own weight > 4 tons
  • HV – Graders, own weight > 4 tons
  • IA – Towing vehicles, motor > 15 kW *
  • IB – Sweepers, snow plows and blowers, motorized wheelbarrows, etc., motor > 15 kW
  • IM – Excavators and shovels, own weight ≤ 4 tons
  • JF – Forklifts with telescopic boom, lifting capacity ≥ 1.2 tons but ≤ 10 tons compared to 0.6 m load center
  • JL – Forklifts, lifting capacity ≥ 1.2 tons but ≤ 10 tons compared to 0.6 m load center *
  • KG – Forklifts, lifting capacity ≥ 10 tons *
  • KL – Forklifts with telescopic boom, lifting capacity > 10 tons

Here you can find an overview of all registration categories.

∗ Please note that the machine needs to meet the requirements for the type and equipment of vehicles so that it can be registered for driving on public roads.

∗ Devices in categories IA, JL and KG usually do not meet the requirements for the type and equipment of vehicles and you need to apply for their registry separately by contacting the AOSH service center at vinnueftirlit@ver.is, by phone 550-4600 or via online chat on this page.

Change of Ownership

A change of ownership of heavy machinery must be reported to the AOSH. The seller and the buyer are both responsible for announcing a change of ownership. It can only be reported electronically at My pages.

The price of the change of ownership is determined in the tariff for special inspection and service work – item 108.
